Clinical Research Core Competencies Framework

In order to ensure the effective, ethical, and safe conduct of clinical trials, research teams need to acquire a core set of competencies. This detailed and interactive framework lists the skills and knowledge research teams need in three different proficiency levels. It supports research professionals when planning the acquisition of new skills, structuring the work of research teams, and developing training curricula.

Conducting clinical trials with the right set of skills

What it is:

The detailed and interactive Clinical Research Core Competencies Framework (CRCC Framework)lists the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that clinical research teams need to run clinical trials.

What it can do:

The CRCC Framework is structured in eight domains and presents three levels of proficiency that research professionals should individually develop as they gain experience. It allows research professionals to:

  • structure and facilitate career development
  • find relevant training to develop specific competencies
  • organise and structure the work of research teams when running a clinical trial
  • align and improve training
  • clearly define job descriptions and clinical research positions.
Who should use it:

The framework can be used by research professionals who develop training curricula in clinical research, investigators and their research teams, and leadership at university hospitals.

Who is behind this resource:

This framework was developed by the SCTO Education Platform and was first published in September 2021.

Background

The Clinical Research Core Competencies Framework was created as a result of the Federal Office of Public Health’s Roadmap for Developing the Next Generation of Clinical Researchers, which aims to facilitate the career progression of young clinical researchers and medical students interested in research and to promote the overarching goal of improving Switzerland’s status as a centre of biomedical research and technology. The framework is based on the Core Competency Framework developed by the Joint Task Force for Clinical Trial Competency (JTF) and has been adapted to Swiss legislation on human research.

The SCTO Education Platform describes in a Swiss Medical Weekly article from September 2022 how they went about developing the framework.
